Pune among eight districts under IMD’s ‘orange’ alert this week

The India Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange’ alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 201.4 mm in 24 hours) for eight districts in Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan till September 15.

This includes Pune, Satara and Palghar as well as Thane, Mumbai (Raigad), Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, and Thane.

These districts are expected to experience the most intense rainfall on Monday.

Pune will experience heavy rains in the areas around the ghats. However, the rest of the city should see light-to-medium rainfall (6.4mm to 64.4mm within 24 hours), over the next three day. Over the weekend, all the major dams of Pune reached their full capacities and water from the Khadakwasla Dam was released. Pune saw 449.6mm rainfall this season. That’s four percentage less than the normal.

Maharashtra’s rainfall has been steady for over a week due to favorable conditions. The state’s seasonal rainfall stood 10 per cent surplus on Sunday.

Marathwada aside, the southwest monsoon was present over most of Maharashtra Sunday. The sub-divisions Konkan & Goa (213%), Madhya Maharashtra (37%), and Vidarbha (175%) all saw large surplus rain days. On Sunday, Maharashtra saw a 122% increase in rainfall.

The well-known low pressure that developed near the Odisha coast of the Bay of Bengal in west-central Bengal intensified to a depression Sunday evening. In the coming days, this system is likely to be moving west-northwestwards across Odisha and north Chhattisgarh.

A second low-pressure system formed over the Southwest Rajasthan region last week. From this low-pressure area, the monsoon peak reached the Bay of Bengal depression.

“Due to these systems, the monsoon will be active over Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra — mainly Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra till Wednesday,” said Anupam Kashyapi, head, weather forecasting division, IMD, Pune.
